Classic Console Hockey for the Modern Age
Hey there, welcome to "The Edge: The Next Gen Hockey Experience"! This project was a dream come true for me as a huge hockey fan. But, being a fan didn't mean I could just dive in without making sure the user experience was top-notch. So, I did some research and checked out other games (even non-hockey ones) to build a process for concepting, moodboarding, wireframing, and art.
The UX was the big focus of this game. We noticed some common frustrations in other hockey games and worked to make sure our game was better. We wanted it to be competitive and have a fresh feel, but still be easy for classic gamers to pick up.
One big thing I learned was to always keep updating my moodboard. At first, we were going for a wood paneling look, but eventually switched to a sleek, intense style with shattering glass (so cool!). The biggest challenge was making sure the intense elements were still legible, especially in the complex Team Selection screen.
So, what I took away from this project was to go with my gut and trust my instincts. Just like in that old classic song "Hooked on a Feeling".

With previous hockey games the biggest UX challenge has always been the team selection screens. These classic games display only one team at a time, requiring the user to flip through all 32 teams to make their final decision. The navigation on these screens are decor at best as they don't inform the user of the previous team or the upcoming team in the list.
To solve this problem I went against the grain; bringing in aspects from other classic games. I decided to layout the screen using a "fighter style" character selection. This allows all 32 teams to be seen at once; while also highlighting a star player to provide ample opportunity for animation and movement (the wow factor).
